System Solution
A room-by-room heat load calculation revealed an actual design heat loss of 14.58 kW, making it possible to avoid oversizing the new heat pump and to select a unit with a nominal capacity of 16 kW.
The solution adopted was Clivet’s EDGE PRO, a reversible monoblock heat pump for outdoor installation using R290 (propane) refrigerant, capable of supplying water at temperatures up to 80 °C, operating with A+++ seasonal efficiency (at 35 °C), and functioning down to outdoor temperatures of -25 °C.
Results
Accurate sizing based on a thermal load analysis made it possible to replace the previous 40 kW boiler with a high-efficiency Clivet EDGE PRO heat pump of just 16 kW, capable of meeting the building’s entire demand for heating, cooling and domestic hot water, resulting in reduced running costs.
The high flow temperature provided by the EDGE PRO — set at 54 °C rather than the standard 45 °C — meant that 16 of the 19 existing radiators could be retained, limiting the replacement to just 3 units and avoiding invasive work inside the property.
The installation of EDGE PRO also enabled the property to qualify for the UK government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant for the decommissioning of the LPG system.
Finally, the design of the EDGE PRO heat pump and its quiet operation were highly appreciated by the owners.
