Battery and Accumulator Waste (abbreviated to RIPA) is waste arising from batteries or accumulators that have reached the end of their useful life.

The relevant legislation and collective schemes for the management of RIPA

European legislation on batteries has evolved from the directives of the 1990s and Directive 2006/66/EC to EU Regulation 2023/1542, which redefines the entire life cycle of batteries within the European Union, imposing new and stringent obligations on manufacturers and economic operators regarding sustainability, traceability and end-of-life management.

The legislation is based on the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), an environmental policy strategy which places the financial and operational responsibility for managing a battery’s entire life cycle on those who place it on the market, particularly when it becomes waste.

In Italy, the regulatory framework has been fully aligned with European rules following the entry into force of Legislative Decree No. 29 of 10 February 2026 (known as the ‘Batteries Decree’), which came into effect on 7 March 2026. This decree repealed the previous legislation (Legislative Decree 188/2008) and introduced the national transposition of European Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

Battery type compatible with Clivet in accordance with EU Regulation 2023/1542:

Industrial batteries: batteries designed for industrial use, including those for stationary energy storage (e.g., photovoltaic systems), weighing more than 5 kg, and which are neither electric vehicle batteries, nor batteries for light-duty vehicles, nor automotive batteries.

In order to comply with EPR, Clivet, through the Ecoped consortium, will collect all industrial batteries > 2 kWh free of charge, regardless of the battery’s chemical composition or origin.

Collection procedures

Customers, installers or maintenance technicians in possession of a damaged or spent battery must download and complete the checklist below and send it to ritiri@gruppo-safe.it together with:

- a photograph of the battery in its approved container, showing the label with details

- the waste holder’s details for completing the digital form.

If there are no containers or they are unsuitable, the Ecoped consortium will send the necessary instructions for correct packaging.
